For many small or part-time businesses, accounting software can tend to be unnecessarily complex and overblown.  Provided it is well structured, a spreadsheet will often prove perfectly adequate to meet the business bookkeeping needs.  Data entry is quick and easy and the whole file can be given to the accountant at the end of the year for preparing accounts and tax returns.

The Simple Accounts Workbook is one such spreadsheet solution.  It enables a Microsoft Excel user to enter the minimum transactional details necessary to maintain a proper set of accounting records whilst utilising Excel’s range of tools to provide a summary and analysis of the data entered.

At the core of the workbook is a user-defined account codes worksheet.  Initially pre-populated with account codes based on the self-employment pages of a Self Assessment tax return, it can be amended or extended as desired.  Alternative account code sets are also available to freely download from the Payexcel website to cover, for example, property letting or personal finance.

The workbook contains separate worksheets for recording income and expenditure, linked to summary and reconciliation worksheets.  Excel’s integrated autofilter, sort and forms facilities allow further analysis and VAT recording is available for the VAT registered trader.

To allow maximum flexibility of use, the full retail version has no password protection and the licence allows the file to be transferred between and used by both the business proprietor and their accountant.
