PAYExcel Tips

  1. To quickly navigate between input cells, use the Tab key to cycle forwards through them or Shift-Tab to cycle backwards.
  2. When an employee's tax code changes do not overwrite the existing code on the 'Records' sheet - enter the new code on the next available 'amended code' cell, then enter the date from which the amended code is applied in the cell below.
  3. Tax codes can be entered on the 'Records' sheet in upper or lower case, e.g. 647L or 647l.  Where a week1/month1 code is in operation, this can be entered as, for example, 647LW1, 647lw1, 647Lm1, 647lweek1 or 647lmonth1.
  4. If the system cannot interpret a tax code, it will treat it as '0T'.
  5. By default, company directors have an annual earnings period for NIC purposes.  This usually gives rise to lower NIC contributions on earlier payments of remuneration and higher contributions on later payments.  If you wish to use the alternative procedure of evening out the NIC contributions over the year, do not enter the actual date the director was appointed in the 'Director from' cell of the 'Records' sheet until the final pay date of the tax year.  (See HMRC booklet CA44 National Insurance for Company Directors.)
